East West Bookstore

Unless you can carry your dog don't plan to shop here with the pup. Tried to come in the other day and was told I would have to carry him to enter. My dog is 23lbs, it's possible to carry him but I don't want to. Let alone doing it while trying to browse books.

That said if you have a small dog that be stored in accessory this place will work fine for your Castro street shopping.

BookBuyers

If you have a big dog this place get pretty pretty hectic. They pack in so many books at this place that the aisles are super narrow and if it's crowded you'll get stuck from time to time if you have a larger dog.

Really good deals on books though, cheaper than the place next door but a very different type of selection too.

Neto Caffe and Bakery

Pretty solid spot along Castro street for grabbing a quick bite with the dog. No regular water bowl but I have seen one from time to time - doesn't hurt to ask if your dog is in need of a drink.

The bakery goodies are very good, they need to get some dog bake goods though.

Tapioca Express

Outdoor seating is what makes this place dog friendly. Also because the service is so fast you don't have to tie up the dog for very long. I recommend the milk tea with the little Jelly balls - hmmmmm.

Be careful if tying up the dog to the table when ordering, don't seem to be the most secure.

Gelato Classico Italian Ice Cream

The line at this place can take forever. My dog hates waiting around and that's exactly what we do each time we come here. Other than that no real dog perks. The Gelato is good - why I'm willing to wait in the line - but not the greatest overall dog spot.

St Stephens Green Irish Pub

I'm in the same doggie social group that Kevin O. is in and can't argue with his assessment. Every time we come here the treats the dogs like their own. They don't really offer any special like dog treats, or a water bowl but it's just the way they make them feel welcome that counts with me. Food is also great, beer is cold, highly recommend if you are looking for a place to hangout the dog on a weekend afternoon.

Cafe du Soleil

Great wine selection and a decent option if you are a coffee drinker who likes to sit outside on a sunny day with the dog. Decent amount of dog friendly tables, all are located along the the sidewalk right out front. The location is borderline Haight so if the dogs are entertaining enough the people watching can always provide entertainment.

They have a water bowl but they don't seem to consistently put it out. If it's a hot day and you don't see one just ask the staff and I'm sure they would bring one out to you. Good place to stop after taking the dog to nearby Duboce Park.

Since you have to order inside and the water bowl isn't always out I couldn't give more than three bones for the dog experience. Oh and the food is just alright.

Animal House

Just stopped by this place for the first time last week. Nice selection of dog products, the usual stuff you would expect to find. Probably the closest pet store to Duboce Park in case you need to stop by either before or after on your way home.

One nice thing is they are open 7 days a week! Dog supply emergencies never take the day off.

Duboce Park

Love this place. If you stop by between 5-7 pm on any weekday you'll find dog paradise.

The lower section section of the park was converted to the dog specific section, with the upper part being people only. The two are separated by a path, its fairly obvious which is which. On Friday's bunch of the locals organize an informal doggy happy hour, so bring the pup and be ready for a drink. The space if on the smaller side but because it is so dog specific even the biggest dogs tend to have enough room to run. Removed one star since the dog part of the park isn't fenced in.

A few safety warnings - 1. The park is not fenced and Steiner and Duboce can be fairly busy during commute hours, the most common time for owners to be out with their dogs. 2. There has been a rather aggressive Doberman here recently, keep an eye out for him - he'll be with an older gentleman.

Spike's Coffees & Teas

One of the best dog spots in the city. At any time you can find 5-10 dogs hanging out front. The coffee is good and they always have a great pastry selection.

Not a ton of dog friendly seating though so you might end up standing while you drink your coffee if it's busy.

Always have a dog bowl and dog treats on hand.

Borders

Borders in Union Square is a great place to go if you're looking for a new book and don't want to leave the pup at home.

The escalators are tricky to navigate and my dogs gets nervous so we opted for the elevator. Just ask anyone who works there where to find them. Make sure you have a leash with you and keep the pup away from the cafe area.

Minus 2 bones for no treats or a water bowl.

Tiffany & Company

My pooch and Tiffany's jewelry, what could make for a better Sunday afternoon. I've only taking my dog here once but he got all kinds of attention when I was shopping. One of the workers even volunteered to watch him while I was trying one jewelry, that's customer service. No dog treats but they do have gift you can buy for your dog.

My pup and I will be returning here very soon!

Dolores Park Cafe

Nice place to sit outside with your pup and grab coffee or a bite to eat. Proximity to Dolores Park (right across the street) is also a plus! Although you do have to go inside to order, the dog-friendly tables outside have a nice view of the park, and there is usually a water bowl as well.

Duboce Park Cafe

Convenient and delicious place to grab coffee or a bite to eat before or after heading to the dog park across the street. Lots of dog-friendly tables outside the cafe, and always a water bowl. I recommend the smoothies, and the granola & fruit -- so yummy!
