Zeitgeist [Under Review]

PLEASE - do not bring your dog here if he/she is not a fan of one of the following:
Noise
Crowds
Loud people
More noise

But if your fido is comb proof, this is the place to hang outside, smoke endless packs of Marlboros, eat burgers and get drunk. A daytime SF tradition.

Levi Strauss & Company

Totally dog friendly, as long as your dog is small enough to be carried. Which kinda sucks.

But - the super perky sales folks will coo over your tiny pup, and eventually this turns in to a sweet secret discount! whoo!

Reds Java House

Love bringing my little boys here. Plenty of outdoor seating, and the staff will happily hunt you down a quiet table, away from either other dogs, or rowdy frat boys beering it up.

Everytime I come, there's a small, side plate of fries waiting for my guys with my order.

Mission Creek Dog Park

I dig this place!
It is on the small side but the manager of the property told us that an additional dog park will be built in the next couple years.

The gravel surface in the dog park is nice. It’s a small pea gravel with smooth edges and doesn’t get hot like sand at the beach does. It is also way more hygienic because gravel doesn't harbor fleas and ticks like sand or bark chip. I know how hard real grass is to keep green and pretty with hundreds of dogs peeing and running on it daily - and think of all the water wasted to keep it alive! Also - unlike other dog parks in the city, this dog park would be closed during the rainy season if the surface were grass.

Under the gravel, according to the property manager (I totally chewed her ear for an hour - thank you!), there is a drainage system and their maintenance staff also hoses the gravel down twice a week. Running around in the gravel is like running around in sand – it tires the dogs out faster without the worry of bugs or having a wet dog to take home in the car.

The park management supplies the entire park, not just the dog run, with degradable dog poo bags in case dog owners forget to bring their own or run out and the dog run has a doggie water fountain as well as a human fountain and a separate bowl to fill up if your dog is afraid of the fountain, which some dogs are.

I dig it.
Go use it.

Victoria Manalo Draves Park

Another one of those neighborhood spots where folks bring their dogs for social hour.
I don't think this is a place people travel for, which means most of the dogs know each other and are used to playing with one another. A good spot to meet new folks, get some play time in and go about your day. Not much in the way of fenced in - but for a controllable dog, you're ok.

Cheeko B Pet Boutique

I cannot get over how insane I get when I walk in here....I admit it - I go overboard. But where else do I get to deck my tiny dogs out in matching outfits that are actually QUALITY - rather than the same old same old stuff you see in every chain store? I heart this place.

Duboce Park

A great space for dog watching and dog socializing. There's no fenced area, and this park is next to Muni tracks, and flanked by intersections, so only approach with an off leasher if you're sure your guy/gal will stick to you.

Otherwise, there are tons of folks just hanging out with their dogs, reading a book, relaxing in the grass.

tons of water bowls and poop bag dispensers!

In my opinion, Duboce beats Dolores without question - low on the hispters drinking wine scale, and in general, the folks here watch their dogs and know what's going on.

Kilowatt

I love this place.
Bonus for those of us with small dogs - the booths are deep, with plenty of room for your guy to hang out in your lap undisturbed.

Mission Dolores Park

I like this park as a sunny place to to hispter watch. But frankly, as a dog park - it is low on my list if you're a leashed dog kind of person. Enter with caution if your dog isn't savvy around 100 off leash dogs.

Community Thrift Store

A GREAT place to tow your pooch along for an afternoon of treasure hunting. The entire staff welcomes your dog, and even gives you a heads up on if there are other dogs shopping at that time.
Be careful, though - this is a thrift store, and there are a lot of things for an over enthusiastic pooch tail to knock over and make you pay for.

Thee Parkside

Parkside is a low key place, perfect for ending a day in the city with your pooch. The owners and staff are ultra nice, and always have a dog cookie or two waiting.

500 Club

Great place to relax with a beer and your dog. The place is cool in the summer - lack of lights will do that - and the staff are super friendly, and ready to plop a water bowl in front of your guy immediatly.
