5/9 3:20pm

Sanborn County Park

Loads of great trails with varied flora and terrain for you and canine friends to enjoy. Hikes can be short at a couple of miles or extended out for 3 to 4 hours and 5 or 6 miles. Walk up the San Andreas fault. Explore nature trails. My dog loved it.

Also, camping sites (walk-in) are available and there's also a popular hostel in the middle. Not bad for 60 minutes drive south of San Francisco and right in the Bay Area near Saratoga.

Blufftop

This is a pretty damn nice white sand beach just 45 minutes (or so) south of San Francisco. Dogs are quite welcome and share the beach with horses so an on leash policy is mandated. If you have your dog under complete voice control flout that policy if you wish. Given that a horse can kick a dog into next week (and kill it with one such kick) we recommend you stay with on leash. Beautiful spot for an ocean-side stroll with your dog, and way less trafficked sand than Half Moon Bay State Beach just 1.5 miles north of here.

Sunflower Caffe

Lovely large rear garden patio area where this cafe welcomes dogs. If you're up around Sonoma for the day tasting wines this is a great choice for lunch if you didn't pack your own. The food's ok, varied, and quite reasonably priced, for the region.

3/8 11:20pm

Esprit Park

I'll give this a solid 3, as it's a nice space, clearly a local dog haunt where many folks take their pup for a social scene, and at a guess also not officially approved for that purpose as off-leash. So, minus 1 bone each for no fence (dangerous, regardless of traffic speed a dog can still get away) and no running water.

William Harrison Vineyard & Winery

This is a fantastic, small, owner operated vineyard and winery, with stunning wines to offer at price points between $35 to about $80. All grapes other than the Pinot Noir are grown on the property, which is 10 acres. The winery is dog-friendly and offers outdoor seating, water bowl, and are fine for you to bring well-behaved dogs on leash inside with you for tastings. If there's a couple of other dogs already inside then it's fair for them to ask you to wait a turn. All in all, this is about my favourite winery in the region around St. Helena.

Tell Rob that Nick Wade sent you and you should be well looked after!

Chez Maman

The food here is astonishingly good, and very reasonably priced. It is true french basics, like those an aunt from Aix en Provence might do for you when visiting. People in the know really rate their burgers with brie very highly. Chez Maman loses just 1 bone because there's only 2 outdoor tables, which is entirely due to the small space available to them - nevertheless you're welcome with your dog at those outside tables. The food is 100% worth the vist.

El Tonayense Taco Truck

Not bad for a cheap quickie, and the foods alright. The location sucks badly. *** Edit *** revising this down; really, every time I buy something to eat here I wish I'd gone elsewhere. It's ok if you don't mind eating in a filthy area with the Best Buy crowds staring at you.

K9 Playtime

The folks at K-9 are truly dog lovers who care. Your dog can stay, often with one of the team at their home. If anything the facility could use a strong draft of fresh air all day, something I believe they are looking at. Top notch dog care and play for you pooch in SOMA

11/4 11:52pm

Panera Bread

Outdoor seating is a minor plus, but next to King St/280 off ramp is terrible. Food here is really not good either, and sadly there's no soul. I realize this review is my personal view btw. But hey, pooch can come, (although really only if you have 2 or more people) that's important to us dog lovers.

11/1 11:39pm

Ma Maison

Eclectic collection of French home wares, run by Isabelle. She even keeps wonderful French store hours, so be prepared to go on Sat morning. Pooch is 100% welcome. A small neighbourhood gem.

11/1 11:34pm

Iron Cactus

Outdoor seating where pooch is welcome is in the rear garden, approached from the side of the Creamery. It's great to have a new burrito joint in the hood. The food's not Tres Agaves though, so minus a bone. *** EDIT *** screw that minus, I'm re-adding a bone as they were all over giving a water bowl to our dogs and really tried hard to look after us in the back garden. You should go, and take pooch with you, extremely dog-friendly. Welcome addition to the hood Iron Cactus! *** EDIT again *** back to 4 bones. Process and food still not worked out, but it's definitely worth a visit.

SF Muni

Muzzles are the official policy but where else can you take pooch with you on public transit (hint; Europe). Great service for the money with few hassles. Male sure your dog doesn't suffer motion sickness. Other than that, it takes too long to get anywhere so minus 1 bone there.

11/1 4:41pm

Borders

The official dog policy here is that pooch is welcome to browse bookshelves with you. Sometime staff even have treats! Nothing but 5 bones. Hopefully they can stay in business.

11/1 4:37pm

Rincon Park

Unfenced and sadly thus unsafe for free play for many dogs.

11/1 4:32pm

Mission Creek Dog Park

Fenced, safe, and popular. Fresh running water is available, pooch can run free and the gravel surface doesn't bother dogs at all (although it does bother some people). It is in fact designed for sanitation. Nothing but 5 bones here.

Hi Dive

Fun place, inconsistent policy re dogs. Just sneak pooch into the back garden anyway.

10/31 3:13pm

Zipcar

Zipcar's very convenient and a great way to have a car only when you need it when you live in the city. They lose half a bone for crapping on about "pets in carriers" - most dogs wouldn't fit. We ignore that and just cover the back seat. They also lose half a bone for a number of pain in the butt processes including attempting to pin damage costs on you if you didn't notice it and therefore didn't report it when picking up your car. Overall though, well worth it.

10/31 12:00pm

Cento

Awesome coffee :) Awesome coffee :) Awesome coffee :)

10/31 11:57am

Burger Joint

Plenty of dog friendly outdoor tables, great unhealthy food and a solid selection of beers. :)

10/31 11:50am

Crossroads Cafe

Not dog friendly at all. A hitching post and a water bowl out front, and no dogs allowed in the gigantic garden? That's why I never spend any money here.

10/31 11:41am

The Creamery

Expensive, slow and some of the kids working here can be surly at times. But, quite dog-friendly outside so we go anyway, and the crepe are a nice change. They also need to come down on the cars outside, hard. Cars idling nearby really can ruin the experience.

9/23 12:23am

Truckee-Tahoe Kennels

Quick one; they're a solid and friendly daycare bunch, and they seem to genuinely care. My dog Jas came home tired and (seemingly) happy. If you're out skiing and you don't want to worry about pooch, this is a fine place. $30 a day, call ahead to book in, and just bring up to date vet/vaccination records.
