McKinley Square Park
Great views. Not an off leash park though. Word on the street is that one of the parks neighbors call Animal Care & Control when dogs are off-leash.

Unless this park has a hidden dog run in it somewhere I know that it is not an off-leash park.

Mission Creek Park
It's funny to me that the photos on this review are of a dog off-leash. This park is strictly on-leash so who ever took these was breaking the park rule, which is actually a City Ordinance.
This park is beautiful and has an off-leash dog area, Mission Creek Dog Park, which has also been reviewed here.
This little piece of scenic paradise is quiet and very well taken care of, however, the dog owners who do not abide by the rules of the park are also often times quite rude to the park staff.
My understanding is that the park is under the purview of the SF Redevelopment Agency. It is not yet part of the City Parks and Rec, something that is obvious once you see how well it is maintained.
The park has 24 hour security which is for everyone's safety yet dog owners let their dogs off leash and ignore the security guards, even the managers of the property get ignored when they ask people to abide by the park (City) rule.
It's just plain rude people.
The park staff are just trying to do their jobs and one should try to understand it from their points of view, but instead I've witnessed blatant and unabashed breaking of the leash rule, verbal abuse of their staff and a sense of entitlement that comes only from the self-righteous.
Nevermind that there are seniors living in the neighborhood who are often frightened of the dogs off-leash, dogs that could very easily trip or push a senior over and cause them to hurt themselves very badly.
And nevermind that the majority of the children in the neighborhood are very small and many of their parents and grandparents feel uncomfortable bringing them outside where they could be run over by a dog, and, god-forbid, something worse. I recently witnessed a dog owner actually get mouthy and obnoxious with a senior who was out with her grandchildren after she asked the man to please put his dog on a leash because it ran up and nearly knocked down all three of them!
The park spaces in Mission Bay are to be enjoyed by all, not abused by some so that the enjoyment by others is limited.
Also, the park is not small. This particular parcel is small but Mission Bay Parks encompassed park spaces the speckle the entire Mission Bay area from Berry Street south to Mariposa St. When development of the area is complete 45+ acres of the redeveloped 299 acres will be park space. Currently the park probably has about a quarter of that 45+ acres complete and open to the public.
BTW - LEASHES ARE THE LAW. THIS LAW IS NOT SPECIFIC TO THIS PARK. IT IS A CITY LAW AND FOR EVERYONE'S SAFETY ALL DOG OWNERS SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH TO ABIDE BY THIS LAW. UNLEASHED DOGS ARE OFTEN ALSO UNWATCHED DOGS. UNWATCHED DOGS POOP AND IT DOES NOT GET CLEANED UP. THERE ARE CHILDREN WHO WOULD LOVE TO USE THIS PARK IF NOT FOR THE FEAR OF ROLLING IN DOG POOP.

Mission Dolores Park
I stopped bringing my dog here after he suffered several incidents of violent diarrhea from drinking water out of the holes dug in the ground by other dogs. Even if he got one lap in before I was able to stop him he'd get the runs.
BUT...
What really made me stop going there was one of the park patrons. She had an English Bulldog, oh, sorry, an "Olde English Bulldog", excuse me.
She was there with a friend whose dog brought in a toy. My dog stole the toy. I took it away from him. He stole it again. Her dog tried getting it from him. My dog growled. I took the toy away. Her dog persisted with my dog. My dog got the toy again. Her dog persisted some more. I tried to take my dog out of the situation because I saw that he was getting annoyed by her dog and may let him have it at any second.
She said, "Oh, don't worry about my dog, he's thick but he'll get it eventually." I said, "Ok."
But I could see my dog getting more annoyed. Three times I tried to take him out the situation but was told not to worry by this lady. Finally, my dog had had enough.
A fight ensued.
Next thing I knew she had kicked my dog in the side as hard as she could.
It stopped my dog, alright.
It also stopped me. I was shocked. I was speechless. I felt my temperature raising. My face turning red. The tears welling. My fist clenching.
What I wanted to do: kick her. I wanted to yell and swear at her. I wanted to punch her.
What I did: Leash my stunned dog who was just looking up at me like "WTF just happened?" Walked up over the hill towards 18th Street. Sat down on the steps once I was out of sight and cried holding my little buddy next to me.
I never took him there again. Not once.
That was five or so years ago. He has since passed away.
My new dog and my partner's dog like to run around a bit but I still don't feel safe with them there. I've brought them there twice now and once I kept them on leash to whole time. The other time I was too worried that they would run up over the hill and in front of a Muni train so I put them back on leash and went home.

Amazing beer selection. Awesome jukebox. And you can bring your dog in there!
Also, weekends around lunch time they some times have a free barbeque! Extra awesome!

Thee Parkside
Close to my house AND I can bring my dogs there? Sweet!
The music is usually pretty rockin', the food is better than your average bar fare and the booze is plentiful!
If you're playing softball across the street they'll always let your team in without having to pay the cover and once I spilled by beer and the owner bought me a new one!
Their bathrooms could be a little nicer but that's my only complaint!

Mission Creek Dog Park
My dogs like it here a lot. This park is not only nicely laid out for dogs to run around but it's pleasing to the eye of dog owners/walkers who have felt left out in other parks around the city. The park crew take great care of the area and I think it's a nice use of the space around the exterior of the PUC waste treatment plant. Wha else could you possibly put there???
I do think it would be nice to have some more shaded areas in the park and look forward to the trees in the play area, which is only about a year and a half old at this point, growing in to larger, more shade-giving trees.
I appreciate the gravel for a few reasons. One is that even though I Frontline my dogs monthly I know that sand can have fleas and ticks in it and sand stays in my dogs fur forever (one long hair and one moderately long hair dog)...the gravel on the other hand doesn't get in to my dogs fur, save for a little dust which isn't any worse than what they pick up in my backyard. Another reason I like the gravel is that for me and the dogs alike it's quite a workout to walk/run in, like sand is. It tires us all out!
I know my boys love grass, but I also know, as a person with a yard at home, how difficult it is to keep the grass alive and green with dogs running around and peeing everywhere. There are other things my tax dollars should go to rather than paying to keep grass in a dog play area.
I look forward to more dog play areas being developed in the Mission Bay area!
Thanks!
