Zipcar

Cheers to ZipCar for convenience and affordability...it's a little unrealistic to keep pets in the cage all the time, but like others have said, a good covering in the backseat works fine...

Great for trips to the beach/hiking/vet visits...

Golden Gate Park

Golden Gate Park is amazing, but please don't bring UNVACCINATED dogs here... Homeless animals (with homeless people) sometimes unknowingly spread parvo in the park and your dog could catch this deadly disease...be careful!

I love the playground, flower garden, water features! And it is close to Haight Street which always seems pretty animal friendly...

Babies

If you love spoiling your pet, Babies is the place to go! Love all the treats and novelties for dogs and cats...but...pretty darn expensive! Bring your credit card!

Pet Taxi

Pet taxi is a great option for people with the money to use this option! We've had pets dropped off at my old workplace in Pet Taxis and they always seemed happy! Great way to get your pet from one place to another without you.

Additionally, sometimes cabs are unreliable when they hear you have a pet...so it is great to have a company that actually WANTS to take you places with your pet!

SF Muni

4 stars because they allow animals. period.

But, minus a star because of the restrictions, particularly the time restrictions...

As with most muni things, taking your dog on the muni depends on which bus you are on/who your driver is!

To be safest, follow rules exactly and no one will look at you different...

But, sometimes you don't have to muzzle, sometimes you don't have to pay an extra fare, sometimes they will let you on during hours that are technically "off-limits"...

Also, if your dog is a purse dog, you probably won't be required to leash it or muzzle it, while if it is a pitbull, you will be expected to muzzle and leash it. Different standards. Call it related to space/concern for safety/whatever...

I've also seen an iquana on the bus, seen a snake, and brought lots of cats/kittens in carriers (never had to pay to bring foster cats on the bus in their carriers)...animals all seemed pretty happy riding muni...

And then muni has other problems with being late or inconvenient, but it's the best we've got, so...4 stars!

Hotel Palomar - a Kimpton Hotel

Pet-friendly, LGBT-friendly, gorgeous! And you can get some good deals if you look for them... I love the entire Kimpton chain... wine hour every night, and pets are ACTUALLY welcome...they aren't just saying that they are...

It's right downtown near Macy's and all the other great shopping...and also near the Yerba Buena gardens and two movie theaters!

Go for it!

Pets Are Wonderful Support

PAWS is a great organization that helps low-income individuals with disabling conditions like HIV/AIDS keep their pets with them utilizing financial/human support! This keeps pets from being surrendered and possibly euthanized for a lack of a home.

They also keep "watch" on animals that might otherwise go without necessary vet care because of the illness of their owners. By helping these owners do the best they can for their pets, they keep families together!

Bless them!

San Francisco SPCA

Overall 4.5 bones... rounding up to 5...

This organization is HUGE...there is a giant hospital, a spay/neuter clinic, an adoption center, administration, and other parts too...like humane education, a camp for children in the summer, dog training, etc...

So, inevitably, some services are probably better than others, but overall...wow!

Also it is a very pet-friendly employer! Some pets allowed at work (depends on individual circumstances), discount on veterinary services/boarding, bereavement day if your pet passes away, and you meet tons of people who have pets and know great tips on having a pet in the city!

TONS of adoptable animals adopted! TONS of discounted spays and neuters done there! Tons of medical treatments done in the hospital, sometimes on payment plans to help people afford urgent care!

Parking Lot!

San Francisco Veterinary Specialists

Wow... They definitely do some good work here! They are not cheap and do not have payment plans, though they will work with Care Credit, if you qualify for that. They are open 24/7 for emergencies, which has surely saved countless lives... I've always been satisfied with the care from the doctors and other employees at this business.

Please note: They are specialists, so you can't use them for your normal vet stuff...but if you have something crazy going on or an emergency at night...go to SFVS!

Rocket Dog Rescue

I've met some Rocket Dog Rescued dogs and met some of their wonderful volunteers...

They seem to have a good assortment of dogs, and it is wonderful that they do accept pit bull-type dogs... Their minimum "adoption donation"/fee is quite reasonable at ($175) considering the costs of vet care/housing/feeding all of the animals they care for...

Mission Dolores Park

While I think this is a great open, sunny, grassy space for animals, please be safe with your pets.

Homeless animals frequent many open parks like this and while working at a vet hospital in San Francisco, I saw outbreaks of diseases like giardia and PARVOVIRUS that seemed to spread through the common park the dogs shared (Dolores Park). Please don't bring UNVACCINATED dogs to public parks! Parvo is deadly.

Other than that, location is really convenient for people in the Mission and it's close to lots of great shops and the neighborhood is pretty dog friendly in general. And the Mission gets tons of sun, which is fun!

Pet Camp

The customer services is great and it seems like they really try to understand how animals think and know how to value those things that are important to the animals.

This is a great place to board an active dog(or multiple dogs!) or cat(s) as part of a family! When I visited them, they had some great amenities for individuals who love their pets like children! You can pay more for extra individual time, treats, bathing, transportation, swim time, etc.

Assuming you don't have the money to pay someone professional to come live with your dog or cat for a week, it's probably a safer/cheaper alternative to park them at Pet Camp and let your neighbor pick up your mail. (though rates start at 25-32/day for a kitty, and 45/day for a dog, but extras can add up quickly if you want to pamper your pet...)

It is also great that they defer to individual veterinarians about vaccinating dogs for Bordetella every 6 months or once per year. That could save you $100 if you would need to go visit the vet for an extra vaccination that your vet might think wasn't necessary.

They also have an "outdoor" environment for cats, which is great! The only risk is that they'll love it so much they might try to escape a little when they get home, so be extra careful!

Another special thing that Pet Camp does is focus on being environmentally friendly, which I think is better for the pets too!

Pet Camp is a great place for a
