Golden Gate Park
Who doesnt love GG Park? there is soo much space and soo many thiings to do with or without my mutt, I dont think I could do them all in a year if I went every day!
There are some great off leash areas, and some amazing attractions/museums that I love to bring my doggie to when I can. You can even go all of the way out to the ocean. I think we are really lucky to have such a world class park within our city, and reccommend it to each and evey dog owner!

Baker Beach
Baker beach is a great beach for people and quiet calm dogs, but my jazz is too crazy and into everyones stuff to go here too often. I love the amazing bridge view, the easy parking , and the level way to walk out to the water. I have had one or two people be upset with my dog running loose, so I would rather head to chrissy field or fort funston.
10/19 4:02pm
Philz Coffee
I truly enjoy Philz coffee as often as I can get there, i visit the location off 4th street pretty often. The simple way they grind, brew and serve the signature coffee blends is great. I also enjoy the brewed tea blends with fresh mint, tasty!
The treats and pastries they offer are good but not the reason to go, its the coffee and the staff that really are great.
As far as dog friendly, wow I cant tell you how many times in both locations how the nice employess/baristas come out and give here a scratch or some small sample of yumminess!
10/19 3:56pm
Urban Flowers
What an amazing selection they have here. I often find new and different blossoms and plants here that I cannot find anywhere else, even the flower market! The guy I met working there was extremely helpful and put together a great b-day boquet in a jiffy! He even gave Jazz a couple of scratches along the way. they had a waterbowl handy and even treats too.
10/19 3:52pm
Sports Basement
A great place to pick up the equiptment needed to keep our pooch on her toes! I was surprised to find out that they were ok with bringing the dog in, and even had some treats for her too. Like the others have said, there is a limited selection of dog only stuff, but who says a mut cant skateboard or play soccer? NOT ME!
Good prices and easy to get to, we love this place.
10/19 3:48pm
Zipcar
Zipcar is a wonderful way to rent a car, when you know your old beater wont due. I have used thier services on multiple occasions for multiple reasons including taking Jazz for a nice run to Fort Funston! The ease of which you can select a car that day, go jump in with your dog and head out to adventures unknown is truly amazing. I find the vans, small mini trucks, and station wagons the best for giving her the space and safety she needs to go along with us.
Just this past weekend while pet sitting, we used one of the cars to take the troop out to fort funston and had a great time! I had to clean the dogs before the trip home and do a little self vacuuming as well to make sure I returned the car in tip top shape, but that is a small price to pay!
10/14 4:12pm
Bagdad Cafe
Many a late night I have spent here soaking up all the alcohol with french fries, pancakes, pies, sandwiches, etc. (not on the same nights). This place has a great all around menu, something for all times of the day and all sorts of cravings. there outside seating is mostly out on the weekends only, but they will get you a table if you need one. Jazz just loves the bacon (who doesnt?)
I only wish there was more space on the sidewalk for pedestrians to walk by so that the pups tail doesnt get stepped on!
10/14 4:05pm
La Mediterranee
simple yet authentic food and the staff were wonderful with us and the dog. we had a great pasta dish and a salad, and the dog had some of the bread, wow she loves carbs!
10/14 4:03pm
La Fajita Grill
Although very pet friendly with a few tables outside on the sidewalk to eat with your pet. I find this place lacks any real flavor. Mostly bland food and sauces added. I would guess it would be good for the munchies after a night on the town, but I would head to Baghdad cafe across the street first.
10/14 3:56pm
Jeffrey's Natural Pet Food Company
If dogs could have a favorite local deli that offered up the best food possible, Jeffrey's would be it. Great selection of raw dog food. Customers can bring home some of the day's fresh-made selections, in various sized deli containers, or pick from any number of tasty varieties from the freezer.
This place offers a selection of vegitarian dog foods and treats too. Thanks Jeffrey's!
10/14 3:49pm
Swirl on Castro Wine Bar
A great neighborhood place to take some friends, samples some wines and take them home, without having to drive! They sell Liquor as well, some prices are a little high, but they have a great selection for such a small store.
They always welcome calm pets with fresh water and treats from best in show across the street.
10/8 11:06am
Dolores Park Cafe
a wonderful cafe across from one of the most popular parks in the city. I find myself here usually on occasions when my sweet tooth has not won me over (bi-rite creamery is across the street) and I am looking for a simple coffee or sandwich to tied me over until lunch. There is a friendly staff, plenty of outdoor seating as well as the indoor kind. Sometimes me and the pup will stop here on our way to the park for that burst of caffine before she gets her afternoon run in.
the only drawback to this place is how good it is, and therefore how popular it is especially on the weekends. It can be almost impossible to get a table!
10/3 12:58pm
The Slanted Door
One of SF's best restaraunts for years, I would recommend the food here to everyone. In this location they have a wonderful view of the SF bay and some outdoor seating to enjoy it. I have only tried to eat lunch here with my dog outside and it went very well.
The staff is very attentive and friendly with the dog, although I would try to eat at a table along the edge of the outside dining to prevent her from begging from others too much.
You must try the chicken claypot, or shakin beef!
10/3 12:52pm
Boulettes Larder
Wonderful daily selection of local farms organic foods for taking home and cooking yourself or a small changing menu of breakfast or lunch meals that would please anyone. For breakfast you cannot miss with the bignets, they are truly decadant.
The location on the back side of the ferry building overlooking the water is pleasant and seating is plentiful. The staff is very helpful, I enjoy eating here with my pup on days when the farmers market is not going on, because otherwise it is just too busy and frantic.
10/3 12:41pm
Squat and Gobble Cafe
Yummy savory or sweet crepes and salads. This place can be very popular and busy, there is alot of outdoor seating for you and your pup, but when its busy it can be tough to get those prime seats!
Great food and a great location make this place a good choice for breakfast with you, your significant other and your pup.
10/3 12:35pm
Dynamo Donuts and Coffee
OMG, the best specialty, doughnuts you will ever find! They usually only have 4-6 flavors available at a time, but you cannot go wrong with any of them. The kind of place where you cannot stop at just one, flavors like, maple apple bacon, spiced chocolate, and huckleberry!
You order at the street counter from the friendliest staff, coffee, tea and Yummy pasteries! They do have doggie bagles/doughnuts to give to the beggers at your feet.
I CANNOT SAY IT ANY CLEARER OUTSTANDING!
10/3 12:28pm
Peet's Coffee & Tea
A great location for coffee, a bagel in the morning. Like all Peets this location has great coffee and a friendly staff. This location has a large outdoor space shared with other businesses that is very dog friendly.
I love going here on those sunny mornings and getting a bagel from Noahs, and my coffee from Peets and then hanging out on the warm patio.
10/3 12:22pm
Noah's Bagels
Bagels are wonderful here, the closest to NY I have found outside of NY. They have a great variety of flavors, plus other pastries salads and sandwhiches for breakfast or lunch. This location is great for dogs too because there is a large outdoor patio shared with other businesses, so there is plenty of room to hang out and enjoy the sun with your dog. They also sell doggie bagles and have water bowls for the mutts too!
10/3 12:14pm
Hot Cookie
good cookies, and its open late too! if youve got a sweet tooth after the bars this is a great place to get a simple snack. My dog love the smells coming from here and she loves the cookies too (as long as they arent chocolate)
10/3 12:10pm
Cliff's Variety
Just what the name implies, a BIG variety of almost everything! This is a great neighborhood hardware store, the staff is very friendly, knowledgable and great with dogs too. I have had my dog inside and they do have a water bowl out every now and then too.
Keep an eye on the stores windows for some of the most creative displays in the city!
10/3 12:06pm
Blue
THE BEST macaroni and cheese! This is a great small diner place with home cooking kind of food. They do put out a couple of outdoor tables when its warm, which is easy to use with your puppy (she loves the food too). The tables are on a narrow sidwalk, so there can be some interference. The staff is great too.
10/3 12:00pm
Alamo Square
A great off leash park with a postcard view! I have only taken my pup here when I have friends or family visiting in town and they love how the painted victorians are in front of the downtown view.
This is a pretty big park with some trails, tennis courts etc. There are great open spaces to run your dog too, but the way the park is built on a hill, I have found I need to not throw the ball for distance because it will keep going and going and going down the hill. There are alot of cars and buses that cirlce the park because its soo beautiful.
Parking can also be difficult.
10/3 11:56am
China Basin Park
A great quiet little park with alot of good smells going on for a curious mutt.
This park is on McCovey cove and has a lot of rocks along the shore that my pup loves to travers and tries to go after ducks in the water or mice in the rocks.
There is a long slender grassy area that is great for playing fetch and another area that surrounds a mini baseball diamond built for t-ball. My dog loves this park and has even had the odd encounter with a sea lion near the waters edge!
The homeless use this park regularly, but I have never had a problem with them.
10/3 11:50am
Esprit Park
A great flat park that is never busy, so its easy to let your dog run off leash. There is some barriers to the streets but not all of the way around.
I hope this park gets more popular as some of the new local condo buildings fill up and more dogs move into the neighborhood.
10/3 11:48am
Mission Dolores Park
A great park with too much space to use! On warm weekends this place is full with people, tennis courts, basket ball courts, kids playground and bathrooms. There are usually alot of dogs near the top of the park near 19th and the playground, there is alot of space to throw the ball with the dog too.
I especially like the special evenings/days when they have events like symphony in the park or movies at night. The park is always dog friendly and fun
10/3 11:42am
Palomino
During warm weather this is a great place to hang out on the elevated deck with your dog and watch the bay. Especially on weekends like fleet weekend! Alot of heated outdoor tables and a great staff. The food is amazing and the bar has all the cocktails you could want!
10/3 11:39am
Borders
A great bookstore, big selection, and a cafe. Dogs are not really allowed inside and there isnt much space outside to tie up the dog out of the way.
10/3 11:37am
Specialty's Cafe & Bakery
ok food here, and you have to search for a place to tie up the dog while you go inside to order and pick up food. Nearby the Mission creek and plenty of offices so Im sure its busy around lunch time.
10/3 11:34am
Blush Organic Frozen Yogurt
A new place that is dog frienly in the neighborhood!!! Healty food for me and water for the dogs! The street is very busy so keep an eye on your dog and keep him/her on leash.
Im glad that this place took over from the last ice cream place, because they werent so dog friendly.
10/3 11:31am
Reds Java House
Super greasy spoon diner here with alot of outdoor space to sit and enjoy the water view with your dog. I have even had the staff offer my dog some meat for snacking! The patio is large and some of it is covered, but it is surrounded by a large asphalt parking lot, no grass really nearby.
Keep an eye out for drivers moving too fast in the pier/parking lot.
10/3 11:27am
San Francisco SPCA
This is one of the best/biggest SPCA's I have ever seen. The staff is wonderful and the facilities that they offer are great and ever expanding. We have been here a few times when looking for a new dog and found a wide range of dogs to adopt. They have outdoor spaces, and indoor areas to meet and play with perspective pups with or without your current pets.
A great cause, it is unfortunate that with the economy the way it is, I hear they are overrun with people who are surrendering thier dogs.
10/3 11:21am
K9 Playtime
I have only used this place once for daycare, I found it to be set up nicely, and the staff was very knowledgeable. My pup however wasnt happy being left someplace new. I was told she had some seperation anxiety and barked alot of the day. This was soon after we got her, so now that some time has gone by maybe that would be different.
I love how close and convienient they are.
10/3 11:15am
Mission Creek Park
This is a beautiful park, as the other review stated it is very well maintained by the overly attentive staff. I feel like the staff will scold me if I even walk on the grass and do not stay on the asfalt path. The park runs along the mission creek for quite a distance and has some wonderfully appealing shorline for pups who like to explore, but to do that the dog would have to be off leash.
In this neighborhood, there are many many dogs that would use this park as they do the South Beach Harbor park and others (run by the port authority). It is unfortunate that the staff is so overly strict because the only real people that enjoy or use the park are the homeless sleeping in the bushes and the others who just walk through.
I say, let the dogs play and tell the gaurds on thier tricycles to keep an eye on the homeless!
10/3 10:57am
Catch
Good food, the menu is updated weekly. They have a semi outdoor patio overlooking the sidewalk with a nice fireplace in the middle. They also put tables out on the sidewalk if the weather is nice so you can sit with your pup and still enjoy the food and the bar! A great place for weekend people watching, be warned it fills up fast!
9/23 12:43pm
Starbucks
Like many Starbucks, this one has a few outdoor tables with umbrellas, the sidewalk seems a little unprotected but it is wide enough for munching and drinking while they walk by.
I have had some good experiences here with the staff and the dogs, and some indifferent experiences. The problem is probably the high turnover of the location, but they know how to make a lattte.
9/23 12:36pm
Hi Dive
I enjoy the dive bar ambiance of the place, so much that I held a surprise 40th birthday party here, great food, and a great group of people. I have noticed the outdoor patio, and met some friends to have a beer here. There is plenty of room for the dog to be tied up along the fence and the sidewalk is big enough for everyone else to run or walk by.
Its great because its halfway between South Beach Marina park and Rincon Hill park, so incase you need a beer to tied you over, they are here.
9/23 12:30pm
Farmerbrown's Little Skillet
I just found this place, and wow I was happy to find chicken & waffles! I missed them from back home, the fried chicken is great either HOT or COLD. The ordering window is easy to do with a pup, but like the others said, there is no where to eat.
Now I just have to have the willpower not to eat here every week!
9/23 12:24pm
Duboce Park
A neighborhood gem, with a large enough area for running and playing. There is a kids park too that is fenced off just the way I like it!
This park just went through a small renovation, that improved the drainage, sidewalks, and benches. There usually are pleny of doggiebags, but owners arent always great about picking up after here.
Muni is very close, so make sure youve got good control before you let them loose
9/23 12:19pm
Delancey Street Restaurant
A great neighborhood place, inexpensive and plenty of outdoor tables for you and your pup. On the weekends they add extra outdoor tables on the sidewalk to accomodate more people. The protected patio works great to keep the wind from Brannan street to a minimum and to keep the doggies closeby.
The food is fine, kind of middle of the road for SF, but the organization is great
9/23 12:13pm
Gordon Biersch
A great bar in almost what seems like an out of the way corner. A good view, but sort of under the bridge. It depends on who is working as to how dog friendly the place can be, sometimes good, sometimes not. There are plenty of outdoor tables, but to get to them, you almost have to go through the restaraunt.
Its got good lunch or dinner food, especially before or after a ballgame. Burgers, steaks, pasta, salads, fish, a pretty full menu and a full bar, with their own brews.
9/22 11:47am
The Butler and the Chef Bistro
A small french bistro in the middle of a wonderful corner of the city. AMAZING crepes and pain-pardue (french toast). there are really only 3 outside tables and one or two of them are ok for pets. The place is in South Park, so there is plenty of room for the doggie to run before and after stuffing your face.
9/22 11:38am
South Park
South Park is a wonderful hidden park in the middle of a block of SOMA. Its claim to fame is its the epicenter of the Dot.Com. boom. Whether or not that is true, the park does have a great mix of homes, businesses, and rest. The park itself is surrounded by large old trees, it has a playground a a few areas for the dogs to play. During weekdays especially, you will find a great mix of people and pets using all parts of the park, there are poop bags on occasion and if there are no kids playing my pup loves to play on the playground.
There can be a few homeless people around the park that can be a nuisance or just sleeping on a bench. The park is protected from most of the cold wind of the city, but has soo many trees and shade it can be colder there quickly.
9/22 11:19am
The Java House
Great place for a bacon treat for the pup. The owners love dogs and are fine when dogs from the park next door cut loose and make a beeline for the place. More than one owner, including myself have had to sprint off to retrieve the retriever!
There are plenty of outdoor seats and alot of fun characters all of the time too. If your lucky you can catch a random show in the water from sea lions!
9/22 11:15am
Taylor's Refresher
A great view, a TON of outdoor tables and plenty of room to have the dog closeby on the fence. The food is great, burgers, fries and shakes some with a unique touch.
There are always alot of people around, going to lunch or jogging down the embarcadero. If your there on Farmers Market days, be sure to keep the pup away from the tables, I have been scolded on more than one occasion.
9/21 4:15pm
Little Ark Grooming Shop
The people here do a great job washing, combing and trimming up my dogs, especially the one that wont let me put her in a bath! My other dog jazz didnt quite being left there and not getting all day attention so she barked ALL DAY LONG for about 6 hours while they were taking care of both pets. The owners were soo nice and accomodating about the issue and we worked out a way for all future visits to be very short so that Jazz wasnt left alone for too long.
9/21 4:10pm
Animal Hospital of Diamond Heights
A great reasonable vet for all your pet needs, the staff are great. They seem to rotate through some interns but the doc.'s have been great for over 6 years now. I can always get an appt within a couple of days and they have faxed info for me to Boarding places at a minutes notice.
9/21 4:07pm
Wag Hotels
A great place to board your pet, especially if you want to pamper them in a human like hotel! Can be really expensive and they seem to book up fast so call early. The location is great and central to the city, especially if your heading to SFO.
9/21 4:04pm
San Francisco Veterinary Specialists
The vets and personell here are amazing, unfortunately we had to find this out while our dog had cancer and was not long for this world. Over several months and visits to this location, they treated us and our old girl with care and love, especially when it came to the end. I would hate for anyone to go through the same circumstances but everyone there were wonderful.
Like all pet proceedures and meds nowadays the costs here can be overwhelming but how can you not take care of a loved one when they are hurting?
9/21 4:00pm
Rincon Park
Definetly the place to leave your heart in! Its greatly landscaped and offers a big enough grass area to run the pup or have them chase a ball. Another one of the best locations in the city for views both of the scenic and human variety. It is close to the ferry building and we love to stop there going to and from the farmers market there.
Sometimes the homeless can be a nuissance, but overall its a great place with alot of dogs that show up throughout the day.
9/21 3:56pm
Petco
The Typical pet store, the location is kind of wierd, and parking can be a pain, because of the nearby businesses. There also seems to be alot of shall I say undesireables outside the store. But my dog loves this place because they sell some animals there, birds, fish, lizards, hamsters and the like. Good pricing, but I would rather go a little further for a better safer experience.
9/21 3:53pm
Pet Food Express
Friendly staff, alot of Doggie bath booths and a great selection of everything you need for dogs, cats, birds, and all critters. I found this store to be the best for the bird food accessories I need, and they also have great pricing on dog foods. With a parking lot that can be full, its not always easy to get inside, but its worth waiting.
9/21 3:50pm
Pet Camp
If your looking for a reasonable, place to board your pet especially if it needs to be close to SFO, this is it. They are great with pets, medications, food requirements and all the other stuff. It doesnt seem to be in a great neighborhood, and the exercise is done in a large indoor/outdoor cement yard. They make up for any shortfalls with great attention and a reasonable cost.
9/21 3:44pm
Hotel Frank
This is a great Dog Friendly hotel, we had our floors refinished and therefore had to scedadle for 2 nights, at the last minuite! Luckily we came across this hotel, right downtown. They allow pets only to a certain poundage, ours is 45. They were very friendly and accomodated us and our pup easily. The hotel is recently remodeled, into a very Modern/Retro kind of way, with wifi, flat screen TV and nicely modern clean bathrooms and bed linens. We also had to order dinner one night from the Max's place and they offered a couple of ideas for feeding/treats for the pup.
The closest park is Union Square, so there isnt a place to run the pup nearby, however if you need to reccommend a place for a friend and thier dog to stay this is it!
9/21 12:48pm
Philz Coffee
What a great single cup of coffee or tea! this place is in a great location just off King street and near the 4th street park along the waterway. They have a couple tables and benches to hangout with your dog and they do offer treats and water bowl for fido as well.
9/21 12:46pm
Crossroads Cafe
Part of the Delancey Street foundation, this cafe is a great place for breakfast or lunch, plenty of outdoor seating. If your just picking up something togo, there are 2 tie ups for the many dogs that visit. A couple of the employees do really spoil the familiar dogs with lunchmeat and other treats. A small bookstore inside and wifi is available.
You have to take the dog thru the place if you want to eat outdoors with your pet.
9/21 12:39pm
Chez Papa Bistrot
Great food, a couple of outdoor tables for munching. More of a dinner place in my mind, so I wouldnt bring the pup always, however it is very romantic.
9/21 12:37pm
Cafe Flore
A great place for simple coffee, breakfast and a sandwich. Plenty of outdoor tables for enjoying the view with your pet. The weekends can be really busy so its not always easy to get an outside table. Ive eaten there several times and you cant go wrong.
9/21 12:33pm
Carmen's Pier 40
Great location, lots of outside seating, and very dog friendly, but the food is greasy. Beer specials for game days are a great bet.
9/21 12:31pm
21st Amendment Brewery
Great food, and they always seem to have a waterbowl outside for dogs who dont mind waiting while dad gets a beer! The outside seating is only put out during ball game nights on the alley next to it.
9/21 12:29pm
Burger Joint
plenty of outdoor tables, but they dont feel protected. A good burger for sure! Down the block a couple doors is Amici's they dont want dogs in their outside seating.
9/21 12:25pm
South Beach Cafe
I cannot tell you how often I have eaten outdoors here with my dog. Whether your interested in a simple esspresso or an authentic italian small pizza, this place rocks.
Run by actual italians, it shows! The menu is not very large but it is excellent. If you like to watch football (soccer) this is the place to catch it.
9/21 12:22pm
Panera Bread
A great place for lunch, good sandwiches and salads, there are outside tables, but they are on the sidewalk, so I felt like I couldnt get out of the way.
9/21 12:20pm
Furry Tales
A nice place to visit, the street sort of seems desolate, and the inside is cramed.
Overall a great selection of toys and treats.
9/21 12:18pm
Bayside Market
Nice neighborhood market, I wish there was a place to tie fido up while shopping inside.
9/21 12:17pm
San Francisco Giants Baseball
Who couldnt resist taking your dog on the boardwalk along McCovey Cove, and watching a couple of innings of the ballgame through the fence. Hot dogs and Beer too!
9/21 12:14pm
South Beach Park
This is my neighborhood place, we come here almost twice a day and our dog loves it! great space for running and mostly protected with bushes and the marina. Since this place is run by the marina/port authority there is some extra freedom, and the Java House is great for BACON if you and your dog love it!
Certain times of the year some parts can be overwatered, so if your dog is a mud eater, it may not be your favorite place.
9/21 12:09pm
Mission Creek Dog Park
This place is too small, and has too hard of a gravel surface. Its good in a pinch, however if you want to use the nearby grassy parks, beware of the rangers on tricycles warning you to put your dog back on a leash.
9/21 12:05pm
John Mclaren Park
Kind of a hidden treasure, always pretty empty and not maintained very well, but if your dog is a swimmer the small "lake" or pond cant be missed. Fun chasing ducks can ensue too!
9/21 12:03pm
Crissy Field
If your looking for a great walk on the beach with your dog, you cant go wrong here, and dont forget the best damn view imaginable! This beach can get crowded on weekends, and that means alot of families and children who can get in the way of ball tossing!
9/21 12:00pm
Best in Show
Hands down the friendliest people here, they love pets, especially dogs and it shows. The food selection could be better but our dog loves the toys in this place
9/21 11:58am
The Creamery
Great coffee and tea, and a wonderful patio to sit and watch all of the commuters hop on or off caltrain!
9/21 11:57am
Pawtrero Hill Bathhouse and Feed Company
Before the sister location, South paw opened, this was the ONLY place to get the best food for our crazy mutts!
9/21 11:56am
Paragon Restaurant & Bar
Paragon has the BEST Frito Misto in the city! and who couldnt resist taking a seat outside with your pet people watching all of the baseball fans! They are soo freindly here and have been known to bring out a treat or two for our Jazz!
9/21 11:53am
South Paw Bathhouse & Feed Co.
Such a great place for both dogs and their pets, a feast for the nose and the eyes! The friendly knowledgable staff and the wonderfull range of healthy organic food, treats and goodies made just for fido! A sister location to Paw-trero and they certainly live up to it.
9/21 11:50am
Duboce Park Cafe
who doesnt love good food, good company (Jazz) and a good view, of a great neighborhood park that all dogs love!
9/21 11:48am
Fort Funston
The great thing about this park is its all DOGS! Youve got two options here, hiking through the wild california countryside, following the paved trails, or you can head down to the beach and have some fun with fido in the ocean. Both are a great workout for both dogs and thier human pets.
8/8 1:29pm
Town's End Restaurant & Bakery
On the weekends who could resist sitting outside enjoying the swedish pancakes while feeding the dog those delicious muffins under the table!
Great food, great people
