We love this off-leash beach but unfortunately when we got there yesterday (8/23/10) there was a new sign up at the gate that said, "no pit bulls." However if you stay on the same road and go down a ways you can access the beach through Lawson's Landing. Ultimately Lawson's Landing and Dillon Beach merge. It is a clean, beautiful beach that is large enough to provide you with your own space. Current day use fee is $8.00.
Great place to hike with your 4-legged friend. Dirt/gravel trails of varying degrees of difficulty. Very peaceful with amazing views from the top of the hill. Plenty of benches for resting along the way and several ponds/lakes for your dog to cool off in. One restroom with drinking fountains in the parking lot and one waste bag dispenser at start of the main trail. It's $6 to park in the lot, but there is always plenty of free parking on the street.
We live just a few blocks away and take our dog there several times a week. It's great. There are both paved paths and dirt trails of varying degrees of difficulty, but not particularly strenuous for the most part. You can access Spring Lake from nearby Howarth Park as well. View from the top of the dam offers nice views. Several restrooms available for the humans and waste bags provided at several locations along the way for the dogs. There is also one doggy water fountain available not far from the campsite area in case you forget water for your 4-legged friend.
