Cheers to ZipCar for convenience and affordability...it's a little unrealistic to keep pets in the cage all the time, but like others have said, a good covering in the backseat works fine...
Great for trips to the beach/hiking/vet visits...

Zipcar's very convenient and a great way to have a car only when you need it when you live in the city. They lose half a bone for crapping on about "pets in carriers" - most dogs wouldn't fit. We ignore that and just cover the back seat. They also lose half a bone for a number of pain in the butt processes including attempting to pin damage costs on you if you didn't notice it and therefore didn't report it when picking up your car. Overall though, well worth it.

We got rid of our car when we moved to the city, and Zipcar has made it SO EASY to get around when we need a car. I love the system. We haven't had problems with dirty cars, and I know plenty of other dog owners using the cars- the rule is 'Pets in Carriers' although we use a cover instead to make sure Captain doesn't shed or get the car dirty, since he's fairly large and lugging a carrier just isn't gonna happen. He LOVES riding in the car- probably because he knows it means we're going somewhere fun!

Zipcar is a wonderful way to rent a car, when you know your old beater wont due. I have used thier services on multiple occasions for multiple reasons including taking Jazz for a nice run to Fort Funston! The ease of which you can select a car that day, go jump in with your dog and head out to adventures unknown is truly amazing. I find the vans, small mini trucks, and station wagons the best for giving her the space and safety she needs to go along with us.
Just this past weekend while pet sitting, we used one of the cars to take the troop out to fort funston and had a great time! I had to clean the dogs before the trip home and do a little self vacuuming as well to make sure I returned the car in tip top shape, but that is a small price to pay!

If you are like us and sold your car because you were sick of the parking tickets, the keyings, the scratched bumpers and the early wake-ups for street sweeping then you know how important car sharing is. We spent around $1000 on it this year but when you think of what it would have cost for a car payment, insurance (included), gas (included) and parking this is awesome!
If you are a dog lover too you know how sad it would be to never be able to take your mutt to the beach or a vet appointment via normal transportation. Enter zipcar. There are plenty of models in great locations all over SF and many other cities. Unlike City Carshare, Zipcar ALLOWS pets in carriers.
We have a giant pop up dog crate we slide into the car. It weighs nothing so it's easy for us to get it in and set up. Then she jumps right in containing her hair inside. We visit Chrissy, the vet, and the Christmas Tree farm with the mutt in tow. Then we return the car hair free and avoid any fees or angry users! It's great as long as you are a conscious pet-owner!
